I tripped over some crabby girl's luggage, and then she yelled at me, and then I sneezed, and then I exploded, and then she yelled at me again, and I felt really, really bad, and I just wanted her to stop yelling at me!

Ruby: (quickly jumping into her sister's arms) Oh, God, it's happening again!

Yang: (deadpan) Oh my God, you really exploded.

Ruby: It was an accident. (getting down; to Weiss) It was an accident! (Weiss holds up a pamphlet titled "DUST for dummies and other Inadequate Individuals" to Ruby) What's this?

Ruby: (putting the pamphlet away) Yeah! Great idea, sis! (holding out her hand as she clears her throat) Hello, Weiss! I'm Ruby! Wanna hang out? We can go shopping for school supplies!
ルビー：（パンフレットをしまって）うん！　良い考えだよ、お姉ちゃん！（手を差し伸べて、改まって喉を鳴らし）こんにちは、ワイス！　私はルビー！　一緒に出かけない？　学校で必要なもの買いに行こうよ！

Weiss: (seemingly enthusiastic) Yeah! And we can paint our nails and try on clothes and talk about cute boys, like tall, blond, and scraggly over there!

Jaune: Hm?

Ruby: Wow, really?!

Weiss: (dead silence under her glare) No.
ワイス：（じっと睨んで物言わぬ間があり）いいえ。

The girls' attention is drawn to the stage, where Professor Ozpin is readying the microphone, with Glynda beside him.
女子たちの注意はステージへと向けられ、そこではオズピン教授がマイクの準備をしていた。グリンダも隣りにいる。

Ozpin: I'll... keep this brief. You have traveled here today in search of knowledge, to hone your craft and acquire new skills, and when you have finished, you plan to dedicate your life to the protection of the people. But I look amongst you, and all I see is wasted energy, in need of purpose, direction. (as the students whisper among themselves) You assume knowledge will free you of this, but your time at this school will prove that knowledge can only carry you so far. It is up to you to take the first step.

Yang: He seemed kind of... off.

Jaune: (approaching Weiss from the side) I'm a natural blond, you know!

Weiss puts her hand to her face in exasperation.
腹立たしそうにワイスは顔に手をやる。

The first night at Beacon, students are splayed out in sleeping bags. Ruby, in her pajamas and with a sleeping mask around her head, is writing in a journal when Yang crashes next to her, similarly dressed.
ビーコンでの最初の夜、寝袋にくるまった学生たちが雑魚寝している。ルビーは寝巻姿で頭にアイマスクをかけ、日記を書いている。同じく寝巻姿のヤンが隣に倒れ込む。

Yang: It's like a big slumber party!
ヤン：でっかいお泊まり会みたい！

Ruby: (not looking up) I don't think Dad would approve of all the boys, though.
ルビー：（見もせずに）お父さんはここの男子全員認めないだろうけどね。

Yang: I know I do! (purrs as she watches several muscular, shirtless guys... and Jaune, dressed in feetie pajamas, waving to her, which makes her groan before she returns her attention to Ruby) What's that?
ヤン：うん知ってる。（満足げに唇を鳴らす。数人のシャツを脱いだムキっとした男たち...とジョーンを眺め）それ何？

Ruby: A letter to the gang back at Signal. I promised to tell them all about Beacon and how things are going.
ルビー：シグナルの連中への手紙。ビーコンのこととかこっちでの様子を伝えるって約束したの。

Yang: Aw, that's so cuuuute! (knocked back as a pillow is launched at her face)
ヤン：あぁ〜ら可愛いらしぃ〜〜！（顔に枕が飛んできて後ろにのけぞる）

Ruby: Shut up! I didn't get to take my friends with me to school! It's weird not knowing anyone here!
ルビー：うるさい！　私は友達と一緒に学校に来れなかったんだから！　知らない人ばっかりなんて変だよ。

Yang: What about Jaune? He's... nice! There you go! Plus one friend! That's a hundred percent increase!
ヤン：ジョーンはどうなの？　彼は...良い感じでしょ。それでいいじゃん、友達一人獲得！　100％の増加！

Ruby: (turning on her back) Pretty sure Weiss counts as a negative friend. Back to zero...
ルビー：（仰向けに転がって）間違いなくワイスはマイナスの友達として数えるよね。0に戻る、と...

Yang: There's no such things as negative friends! You just made one friend and one enemy! (hit with another pillow, this time looking like a dog, to the face) Look, it's only been one day. Trust me; you've got friends all around you! You just haven't met them yet!
ヤン：マイナスの友達なんていないよ！　あんたには友達一人と敵一人ができただけ。（別の枕が顔に当たる。今回は犬の形した枕）ほら、まだ一日目でしょ。信じなよ、あんたはもうそこら中に友達がいる。まだ出会ってないだけ。

The two sisters notice a candle being lit nearby, and Blake Belladonna is seen leaning against a wall, reading her book.
二人姉妹は近くでキャンドルが灯されるのに気付く。そこでブレイク・ベラドンナが壁にもたれて読書をしているのが見えた。

Ruby: That girl...
ルビー：あの子...

Yang: You know her?
ヤン：知ってる人？

Ruby: Not really. She saw what happened this morning, but left before I could say anything.
ルビー：いやあんまり。今朝起きたことあの子見てたの。でも私が何か言う前に行っちゃった。

Yang: Well, now's your chance! (grabs Ruby's arm and lifts her up)
ヤン：んじゃ、今がチャンス！（ルビーの腕を掴み、持ち上げていく）

Ruby: Wait! What are you doing?!
ルビー：待って！　何するつもり？！

Blake looks over her book to see Ruby unsuccessfully struggling against Yang's grip as she leads her sister over to Blake's spot before letting go.
ブレイクは本越しに、ヤンの腕掴みに虚しく抵抗を見せながらも引き摺られて来るルビーを見る。ヤンはブレイクの前まで妹を連れて来ると解放した。

Yang: (singing) Hel-looooo! I believe you two may know each other?
ヤン：（歌うように）ハッロー！　二人とも知り合いなんだよね？

Blake: Aren't you... that girl that exploded?
ブレイク：あなたは...爆発してたあの子じゃないかしら？

Ruby: Uh, yeah! My name's Ruby! But you can just call me Crater... (smiles, embarrassed) Actually, you can just call me Ruby.
ルビー：あー、うん！　私はルビー！　あだ名で呼んでくれてもいいよ、噴火...（笑って、バツが悪そうに）やっぱり、ルビーって呼んで。

Blake: (back in her book) Okay.
ブレイク：（本に戻って）わかった。

Yang: (whispering to Ruby) What are you doing?
ヤン：（ルビーにささやいて）あんた何やってんの？

Ruby: (whispering back) I don't know - help me! (goes back to smiling)
ルビー：（ささやき返して）わかんない助けて！（笑顔に戻って）

Yang: So... What's your name?
ヤン：それで...あなたの名前は？

Blake: (sighing as she's distracted yet again) Blake.
ブレイク：（また注意をそらされてため息をつき）ブレイク。

Yang: Well, Blake, I'm Yang, Ruby's older sister! I like your bow!
ヤン：じゃあ、ブレイク、私はヤン。ルビーの姉！　その蝶リボン良いね！

Blake: (irritated) Thanks!
ブレイク：（イライラして）どうも。

Yang: It goes great with your... pajamas!
ヤン：それかなり良く合ってるよ...パジャマと！

Blake: Right...
ブレイク：そうね...

Yang: (as Ruby laughs uncomfortably) Nice night, don't you think?
ヤン：（居心地悪そうにルビーが笑い）素敵な夜だと思わない？

Blake: Yes - it's lovely! Almost as lovely as this book! (Ruby and Yang stand there) That I will continue to read. (Ruby and Yang continue standing) As soon as you leave!
ブレイク：ええ。とっても！　この本と同じくらい素敵。（突っ立っているルビーとヤン）あなたたちが行ったらすぐ（立ったままのルビーとヤン）読み進める予定のこの本とね。

Yang: (to Ruby) Yeah, this girl's a lost cause.
ヤン：（ルビーに）あーあ、この子は脈ナシだわ。

Ruby: (to Blake) What's it about?
ルビー：（ブレイクに）それどんなの？

Blake: (surprised) Huh?
ブレイク：（驚いて）は？

Ruby: Your book. Does it have a name?
ルビー：あなたの本。名前あるでしょ？

Blake: Well... i-it's about a man with two souls, each fighting for control over his body.
ブレイク：ええと...これは二つの精神を持つ男の話。互いに体の主導権を争うの。

Yang: (sarcastically) Oh, yeah... That's real lovely!
ヤン：（皮肉げに）ふーん、へえ...それは実に良いね！

Ruby: I love books. Yang used to read to me every night before bed. Stories of heroes and monsters... They're one of the reasons I want to be a Huntress!
ルビー：私、本が好き。ヤンが昔毎晩寝る前に読んでくれてて。ヒーローとモンスターの物語...。私がハントレスになりたい理由の一つなんだ。

Blake: (laughing a little) And why is that? Hoping you'll live happily ever after?
ブレイク：（少し可笑しそうに）それはまたどうして？　末永く幸せな暮らしを期待してるの？

Ruby: Well, I'm hoping we all will. As a girl, I wanted to be just like those heroes in the books... Someone who fought for what was right, and protected people who couldn't protect themselves!
ルビー：まあ、みんながそうなると良いなって。小さい頃は、ただその本のヒーローみたくなりたかった... 正しいことのために戦って、身を守る術のない人たちを守る誰かに。

Blake: That's... very ambitious for a child. (her smile turns into a frown) Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale.
ブレイク：それは...子供にしては大望ね。（ブレイクの笑顔が渋い顔に変わる）残念ながら、現実の世界はおとぎ話とは違う。

Ruby: Well, that's why we're here! To make it better.
ルビー：うん、だから私たちがここにいる！　より良い世界になるようにね。

Yang: Oh, I am so proud of my baby sister! (hugs Ruby into the air)
ヤン：んもう、可愛い妹が立派になっちゃって！（ルビーを抱きしめて持ち上げる）

Ruby: (kicking out) Cut it out! (the forced sisterly bonding evolves into a dust cloud of fighting limbs and flying stars)
ルビー：（蹴り出す）やめてよ！（力づくでの姉妹合体は埃舞う雲になり、争う手足や星が飛び出す）

姉のハグに拳で応戦するルビー

Blake: (laughing slightly) Well, Ruby, Yang, it's a pleasure to ha-
ブレイク：（少し可笑しそうに笑って）えっと、ルビー、ヤン、これからよろしく――

Weiss: (storming onto the scene in her own pajamas as Ruby traps Yang's leg) What in the world is going on over here?! Don't you realize some of us are trying to sleep?
ワイス：（ルビーがヤンの足を捕らえたところでパジャマ姿のワイスが割り入ってくる。）ここで一体何をやっていますの？！　寝ようとしている方もいるのがわかりませんの？

Weiss and Yang: (at the sight of each other) Oh, not you again!
ワイス＆ヤン：（二人ともワイスを見て）うわぁ、また出た！

Ruby: Shh! Guys, she's right! People are trying to sleep!
ルビー：シーッ！　ねえ、その通りだよ！　みんな寝るところなんだから！

Weiss: Oh, now you're on my side!
ワイス：あら、今度はこちらの味方ですのね！

Ruby: I was always on your side!
ルビー：いつもそっち側についてたじゃん！

Yang: Yeah, what's your problem with my sister? She's only trying to be nice!
ヤン：ああ、私の妹に何か文句でもあるの？　仲良くなろうとしてるだけじゃんか！

Weiss: She's a hazard to my health!
ワイス：彼女は健康の害悪ですわ！

Blake, who rolls her eyes at the fight, simply closes her book, reaches over to grab her candle, and blows it out, enveloping the scene in black. The ending credits play.
争いを見ていたブレイクは呆れて目を回し、ただ単に本を閉じる。彼女がキャンドルに手を伸ばし、それを吹き消すとシーンは真っ暗になる。エンディングクレジットが流れる。

余談

The book about a man with two souls

The book Blake is reading is about two souls fighting for control of one body. This seems to be a reference to The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, in which Dr. Jekyll struggles to control himself after creating a split personality, Mr. Hyde. While Dr. Jekyll is a kind-hearted doctor, Mr. Hyde is a foul-tempered murderer. The two personalities are often in conflict and attempt to contest control of the same body.

ブレイクが読んでいた体の主導権を争う二つの精神を持つ男についての本は、ロバート・ルイス・スティーブンソン著『ジキル博士とハイド氏の奇妙な事件』を基にしていると思われる。ジキル博士は温厚な医師である一方、彼の別の人格としてのハイド氏は人に醜悪な印象を与える殺人鬼。両者の人格はしばしば対立し、互いの体の主導権を巡って競い合う。

DUST for dummies and other Inadequate Individuals

The back of Weiss' information pamphlet reads: "Hey. How's it going? So, you're interested in Dust. That's cool. Hmm, I'm noticing that you're not very smart, though. Some might say you're a dummy. Probably think you can't use Dust. Well. You probably shouldn't. But you're going to anyways. So, if you are going to, you should at least read this pamphlet. That way you won't kill anyone. Probably won't."

ワイスが読み上げたパンフレットの背面記載事項：やあ、どうしたんだい？　それか、君はダストに興味があるんだ。それは良いね。ふーむ、君はあまり賢くなさそうだね。誰かが君をバカと呼ぶかもしれない。君にはダストを扱えないとたぶん考える。まあ、使うべきではないだろうね。でも、どのみち君は使うんだろう。だから、もし君が使うつもりなら、せめてこのパンフレットは読むべきだ。それで君は誰も殺さずに済む。たぶんきっと。

感想

オズピン教授がまた達観したようなことを言いますね。「知識で解決できることには限りがある」と。胸に刺さる言葉であると同時に、いずれ選択に迫られる状況が来ることを予感させます。

相変わらずブレイクは無愛想でしたけど、少しは進展したようです。彼女の読んでいた本は何かの伏線になるんでしょうか。それはわかりませんが、少なくともこの本についての会話でブレイクが現実世界をやや悲観的に捉えていること、そしてルビーは世界をより良くしたいという意志を根底に持っていることが確認できました。どうやらこの二人は友達になれそうですね。

エンディング曲の"Gold"はヤンをテーマにした曲です。軽妙でキャッチーなメロディが耳に残ります。編曲者Jeff Williamsが登場する回のPodcast*1で、彼が日本のアニメソングに影響を受けていることを語っています（"Gold"の再生は51:30から）。そう言われるとこの"Gold"も古い日本のアニソンっぽい曲調かも。

あとそういえば今回はピュラの初登場回でした。台詞はなかったけど。ジョーンとの関係を仄めかすような演出でした。果たして彼女はジョーンの"nice, quirky girl to talk to"になってしまうのか。そもそも彼女は一体どんな人物なのか。続きが気になります。
